The Six Nations
With
the 2015 England Six nations squad being announced this week it is time to look
back on England’s new millennium record in the tournament.
The
tournament which originally dated back to 1883 is now an eagerly anticipated
event in the rugby union calendar. Scotland was the last team triumphant in
lifting the five nation’s trophy, after 2000 Italy had joined and the tournament
became known as the Six Nations.
England won the first Six Nations competition
and repeated their success again in 2001. Since then they have only prevailed
in the competition twice. In 2003 they became Grand Slam winners and won the tournament.
Again in 2011 they took the trophy home however their Grand Slam hopes were halted
by Ireland.
The
Six Nations takes on an additional importance with the World cup starting in September.
This is England’s chance to make a real statement and send a message to the
competitors.
The
Six Nations is only the beginning of what is to be an incredible year of rugby.
